Overview In today’s fast-evolving digital world, computer literacy is no longer optional — it is essential. CTLaD’s Computer Education and Digital Empowerment Programme provides computer education scholarships to young people from rural and low-income backgrounds, equipping them with the digital skills to excel academically, access career opportunities, and thrive in the modern economy.
The Challenge Many young people in Sierra Leone — particularly those in rural areas — have never had access to a functional computer, internet connection, or qualified ICT instructor. This digital divide puts them at a severe disadvantage in higher education and employment, and disproportionately affects young women, who face additional cultural and structural barriers to entering technology fields.
Our Response CTLaD supports promising young people through scholarships at accredited computer training institutions, covering foundational skills including Microsoft Office applications, computer hardware and software fundamentals, internet research and online safety, and digital communication tools.
African Girls Coding Initiative: As part of our gender inclusion commitment, CTLaD runs a dedicated programme introducing young girls to programming and creative computing. Participants learn JavaScript basics, build interactive animations and visual projects, and develop the confidence, creativity, and critical thinking that prepare them to become future digital innovators.
Certification and Career Growth: Upon completion, participants receive recognised certificates in computer studies and digital skills, opening doors to employment in IT, administrative, research, and freelancing roles, and laying the groundwork for advanced ICT education.
Our Impact The programme has awarded multiple scholarships to youth from disadvantaged communities, trained dozens of young leaders in digital literacy, exposed girls to coding and programming, improved students’ academic research capabilities, and empowered graduates to secure employment or launch small tech-related ventures.
